The Handmaiden premiered at Cannes Film Festival ten years ago, where it received a five minute standing ovation.Park Chan-wook on the use of perspective in the film. “Because the first two chapters are seen through the subjective perspectives of these two characters, I’ve used a lot of close-ups of the eyes watching something. Also, I’ve employed exact point-of-view shots where the camera would act as those characters’ eyes, and we’re seeing the story through those characters’ eyes. Joyland became the first Pakistani film ever selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2022. It went on to win the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard and the Queer Palm, before being submitted as Pakistan’s entry for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.The film is about Haider, a stay at home husband in Lahore, living under the roof of his traditional, patriarchal family. When he secretly takes a job as a backup dancer at an erotic theatre, he falls for Biba, the trans woman at the center of the show. “It’s not a real Japanese word. I made it up. ‘Katatsumuri’ means a snail in Japanese. A snail has a shell, or a house, so to speak. When I was growing up, without a proper family, I felt like a snail without a home.
