Life changes when a lonely, ailing boy named Shou discovers her.“Arrietty, you’re a part of me now. “Maybe the bond is stronger when you choose your family.”Koreeda on that line: “I didn’t feel necessarily that she declared a truth, rather it was her wish for that to be true. I don’t deny that there is some truth to that as well. The reality however is that families who are chosen often don’t last. And that’s what the grandmother says. I would like it to work but I also wanted to interject some reality into it using the grandmother’s voice.” (The Film Experience)Shoplifters (2018), Hirokazu Koreeda #asiancinema by @asiancinemaarchive

The Handmaiden premiered at Cannes Film Festival ten years ago, where it received a five minute standing ovation.Park Chan-wook on the use of perspective in the film. “Because the first two chapters are seen through the subjective perspectives of these two characters, I’ve used a lot of close-ups of the eyes watching something. Also, I’ve employed exact point-of-view shots where the camera would act as those characters’ eyes, and we’re seeing the story through those characters’ eyes. When these POVs are shot, it’s shot with a handheld camera, so that I could give it the sense — there’s a subtle shake to the camera, as if it’s affected by your breathing.” (Daily Dead)The Handmaiden (2016), Park Chan-wook #asiancinema by @asiancinemaarchive

Joyland became the first Pakistani film ever selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2022. It went on to win the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard and the Queer Palm, before being submitted as Pakistan’s entry for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. The film is about Haider, a stay at home husband in Lahore, living under the roof of his traditional, patriarchal family. When he secretly takes a job as a backup dancer at an erotic theatre, he falls for Biba, the trans woman at the center of the show. As his feelings for her grow, the life he has been living quietly begins to crack.Saim Sadiq on what drove him to make the film. “I wanted to talk about patriarchy and I wanted to talk about sexuality and gender in relation to myself and my family and my surroundings and my city. I never looked at it as ‘Oh it is such a bold or courageous film.’ I made the film that I wanted to make.” (Deadline)Joyland (2022), Saim Sadiq#asiancinema by @asiancinemaarchive

“It’s not a real Japanese word. I made it up. ‘Katatsumuri’ means a snail in Japanese. A snail has a shell, or a house, so to speak. When I was growing up, without a proper family, I felt like a snail without a home. So it’s my wordplay on two words: snail and ‘tsumori,’ which in Japanese means, ‘to intend to.’ In this sense, the Japanese title conveys the sense of someone who almost has a home, but at the same time is questioning what it means to have one.” — Naomi Kawase (Film Comment)Katatsumori (1994), Naomi Kawase#asiancinema by @asiancinemaarchive

Hideaki Anno believes that capturing our darkest moments on film can be the first step toward moving through them.In Ritual, that idea plays out literally. The unnamed director turns to his video camera as the only real way he knows how to reach her. Over time, what he captures begins to pull her trauma into the open, and something in her starts to shift. The film is based on Tohimu, an autobiographical novella by Ayako Fujitani, drawn from a painful period in her own life which Anno adapted alongside Fujitani herself.Ritual (2000), Hideaki Anno #asiancinema by @asiancinemaarchive
