Sound uncomfortable? That's what a mammogram feels like.
This cartoon landed in my feed this week & I couldn't scroll past it. A medic telling a male patient to place a certain body part between two devices. The joke writes itself.

Mammography, the standard breast cancer screening protocol for women in both the UK and the US, uses technology that is over 60 years old. S
60! We compress breast tissue between two plates, fire X-ray radiation through it, & read the resulting flat image for signs of cancer. It works. But it can be painful & it misses cancers in dense breast tissue (like mine) .

The experience has barely changed since your grandmother had one. New technologies are coming. Contrast-enhanced mammography, molecular breast imaging, and AI-assisted 3D tomosynthesis are all showing real promise, less compression, better detection, fewer false positives. But they are not yet standard. Not yet available to most women walking into their NHS appointment.

And here is why that matters beyond the discomfort.
The medical world was largely built by men, for men. Caroline Criado Perez documented this forensically in her book Invisible Women: how crash test dummies were modelled on male bodies, how heart attack symptoms in women were classified as atypical because male symptoms were the default, how the majority of drug trials for decades used only male participants, because female hormonal cycles were considered a complicating variable.

In oncology today women make up roughly 30% of surgeons & around a third of oncologists in the UK. In general practice the gender gap is closing, but at consultant and research level, men still dominate the rooms where decisions are made about funding, trials, and screening protocols.

This is about recognising that a system shaped predominantly by one gender will, often unconsciously, centre that gender's experience.

We can do better. And we are starting to.
