Every time I make a yoga reading list I have to do a background check first. That’s just the reality of the yoga world we inherited at the intersection of colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy.⁠

Today the basketball world lost a legend, Stacey King was the best of us. I want to share a small piece of his legacy & the impact he had on me.

This fall I had the opportunity to call my first Chicago Bulls game, a preseason game against the Bucks. After years of calling college basketball, this was a dream come true. But I was nervous, and intimidated as a woman trying to break into the NBA.

Stacey arrived for the broadcast and treated me like we were old friends. He cracked jokes, asked me about myself, and we had great convos talking hoops. I got to enjoy his passionate take on teams switching on ball screens, he hated it. :)

I’ll never forget during a break on that first broadcast he said to me “girl you know basketball! You’re going to be a star!” I was shocked, to hear that from a legend who I admired so much meant the world. After the game the same thing, he gave me so much encouragement. Stacey told me I had the “it” factor and that I’d be an NBA voice one day. He said he’d do whatever he could to help me get there. Stacey could have just shown up, rolled his eyes at working with newbie and gone home. Instead he gave me confidence. He made me feel like I belong. He made me believe in myself.

After the game as I was packing up and catching up with friends, I watched as Stacey went over to the fans in the stands and starting signing autographs, taking photos with people, asking about their lives. I left a half hour after the game and he was still there.

When I got home I opened my phone and had a Twitter message from Stacey. I included it the photo carousel, he just told me it awesome working with me, gave me his number, told me to reach out if I ever needed advice. I sent him a thank you text and we stayed in touch.

During the regular season my parents came to a game I called with him. Afterward they were excited to meet him as lifelong Bulls fans. He cracked jokes, and insisted on going to half court for photos. It made their night, and that was the person Stacey was. He loved making people happy.

An iconic career, unforgettable calls, so much joy. My heart goes out to his friends, family, and the Bulls. RIP Stacey. You were simply the best.

Creating this piece with @luxurylaw for Ari’s big return to stage after seven years was a dream come true for my little gay heart, will never forget this moment! Can’t wait to go and see it with my own eyes!
