The newest generation of Silicon Valley billionaires is openly hostile to the idea of high culture itself, and sees no purpose in improving the lives of those around them through institutional giving, because they don’t view themselves as citizens of this country so much as its victors, lords of a collapse largely of their own making. Hence the bug-out properties in New Zealand, the seasteads, the libertarian free states. Their belief in their own success is so total that they can’t imagine a world after themselves, and so see no reason to support culture, which is an olive branch from the past to the future.
