Today was my last day of medical school. 11 years of hard work, graft, trauma, and so many tears, just packed up and put behind as I left for the final time. I knew it would be an anticlimax, but it was still so strange - just getting into the car and quietly slipping off for the last ever journey back down South. There were no big goodbyes or celebrations - just many hours of stunned silence as I tried to comprehend the fact that I’ve actually done it - I’ve finally made it, to become, and to prove, that you CAN be a deafblind doctor. Of course, it has come at a lot of costs, but perhaps now I can finally say it’s all worth it, because after so long I have made my wildest dream come true.

In my last few days ever of medical school, the company that deliver my liquid oxygen (that allows me to move freely without needing to be hooked up to any walls) failed to deliver the tank due to supply issues. It meant that, in my last few days, instead of celebrating the biggest milestone yet with all my soon-to-be-doctor peers, I was stuck alone in my room connected to the mains (oxygen machine).

I can’t lie - the last few weeks have been incredibly emotional, isolating and overwhelming. I think my body was saying it was done. I was ready to leave - a past place left to ink the pages of an old book. But I’m still grateful - it, along with everything else, has gifted me an understanding for what my patients go through, and still I feel so lucky to have managed so much til now. I hope that helps me be a better doctor for the many years to come.

My journey is done now, and this chapter is complete. It’s been a long time coming, but I guess I can finally call myself a doctor, which feels pretty exciting to be honest. You really can achieve anything you dream of becoming, if you work hard and believe in yourself. Goodbye med school - I will not miss you one bit. Mission, complete. 👩🏻‍⚕️
