Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed a major political milestone, becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in uninterrupted tenure. On June 10, 2026, PM Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s elected-tenure record of 4,398 days. Modi first took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, after the BJP won a historic majority in the Lok Sabha elections. He returned to power in 2019 with an even bigger mandate and then secured a third consecutive term in 2024, making him only the second Indian Prime Minister after Nehru to win three straight national terms. The record is based on elected tenure after India’s first general election in 1951-52. Nehru had become Prime Minister in 1947, but his elected tenure is counted from May 13, 1952, after the first Lok Sabha elections, until his death on May 27, 1964. While Nehru remains India’s longest-serving Prime Minister overall when his full term from 1947 is included, Modi has now overtaken him in the category of uninterrupted elected tenure. The milestone marks another major moment in Modi’s political journey, which began from Gujarat, where he served as Chief Minister for over 12 years before moving to national politics. From leading the BJP to its first-ever single-party majority in 2014 to becoming the face of three consecutive national election campaigns, Modi’s tenure has reshaped Indian politics and made him one of the most dominant leaders in the country’s post-independence history.
