3 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 lipedema. I was almost completely immobile, my body overwhelmed by disordered scarlike tissue building up under my skin, and tens of liters of fluid filling my body between my legs and abdomen. I spent years undiagnosed, searching for answers as my condition worsened rapidly. If it weren't for the compassionate practitioners it took me years to find, I probably would have died.Navigating the medical system in the United States is incredibly difficult by design. Even with the privileges I hold I was on the brink of being a casualty of anti-fat bias in medicine. This has only worsened in the ongoing wave of GLP-1s being push as fix-all, blockbuster drugs. I say this not as a criticism of those who utilize these medications but with an understanding that these medications are often not accessible even to those who need them to manage chronic conditions like lipedema. At the same time, the existence of these medications are weaponized by practitioners who hold anti-fat bias to withhold necessary medical care from those who don't want to or cannot afford to take them.Regardless of your size or health status or chronic conditions you may have, you deserve thorough, comprehensive, compassionate medical care. You deserve to be treated as a human being, with dignity and respect. I will be forever grateful for @realswell_lymphaticwellness and @susanmullins592 for never blaming me for my condition, and always seeing me and both the work that I put in to get diagnosed, and the work I did throughout treatment. This work is lifelong for people who have lipedema. It's work that becomes harder when the condition is ignored by practitioners due to the assumptions they make about the behaviors of their fat patients. These assumptions delay diagnosis and treatment for decades as our presenting symptoms are ignored, despite symptoms presenting as early as puberty for many who suffer from the disorder (cont in comments) #lipedema #lymphedema #stage4lipedema by @jordallenhall
