The “Natasha doll,” a squishy silicone stress toy shaped like a stylised Black baby, has triggered international backlash after videos showed users in China squeezing, stretching, stomping on, and otherwise abusing the figurines on platforms like Douyin and Xiaohongshu.

The toy, sold in different skin tones including Black, brown, and white, is marketed as a novelty item meant for stress relief. It first went viral in late May through short videos showing extreme use, including tearing it apart, pouring boiling water on it, and running it over, often framed online as harmless fun or emotional release.

While all variants exist in the market, most of the viral clips focus on the darker-skinned versions. That has fuelled accusations of racism and dehumanisation. The debate intensified after a widely shared online explanation suggested the Black version was targeted because it looks less “human,” making it easier for users to mistreat without guilt, while lighter versions were described as too human-like.

The trend has since spread to Western platforms, where it has drawn heavy criticism and renewed discussion about racial bias. Some point to broader concerns about discrimination faced by African students and migrants in China, though such cases vary and are not officially endorsed by authorities.

Chinese regulators have not publicly commented on the viral content, which continues to circulate. The dolls are sold for both domestic and export markets through online platforms. While some defend the trend as cultural misunderstanding or exaggeration, others say it crosses a line, especially where children are seen taking part.
