Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’ is among the most reproduced images in art history and the peak of Ukiyo-e: pictures of the floating world. Its level of emotion and gripping detail of a rogue wave threatening fishermen returning from Edo Bay have captured imaginations for centuries—from the Impressionists to our SCAD Bees! Join professor of art history Dr. Cindy Lisica and me on the latest episode of SCADclass as we delve into the depths of this revolutionary piece of art. 🔗 in bio.

“If only Heaven will give me just another ten years ... Just another five more years, then I could become a real painter.” ~ Katsushika Hokusai

The irony of this work that the majority of the world isn't clued in on is that his series of Mt.Fuji has the main focus: Mt.Fuji. The artist wanted to portray how Mt.Fuji fit into everyone's daily lives as opposed to how most artists portrayed it on a grand scale with only Mt.Fuji as the subject. To put Mt.Fuji in the background yet be the subject is an unheard of concept because most main focuses in art are meant to appear like the main focus like the great wave of Kanagawa is to this work
