Ben Burtt, the genius behind the Star Wars soundscapes, ingeniously crafted the iconic Lightsaber sound. He stumbled upon it by swinging a specific microphone near a TV, capturing the crackling of the transmission signal. He blended this with the hum of an old Simplex projector, driven by two drifting motors. Together, they birthed the ambient Lightsaber hum.

To complete the effect, Burtt played this sound through speakers and recorded it with another mic, adding a swooshing Doppler effect by swinging the recording mic. The clash of Lightsabers was achieved by rubbing dry ice on metal and the sound of two carbon arc lamps igniting. Remarkably, no synthesizers were involved. Burtt's innovative use of everyday objects gave us this globally recognized and storytelling sound.
