SAFIR calls on Prime Minister Mark Carney @markjcarney to clarify the language in the Canada–UAE joint statement issued on 28 October 2026, which described Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb as UAE territory under occupation. Iran’s territorial integrity belongs to the Iranian people, regardless of the actions or credibility of the Islamic Republic regime. The islands’ history predates the regime: on 30 November 1971, during the government of Prime Minister Amir Abbas Hoveyda, Iran established control over the Tunbs and reached an arrangement with Sharjah concerning Abu Musa that preserved both parties’ claims. Over the past 24 hours, SAFIR’s executive leadership and chairs have pursued diplomatic outreach on this matter. We urge the Prime Minister to explain the historical and legal basis for the statement and reaffirm that Canada’s partnerships will respect the Iranian people’s territorial rights. © 2026 SAFIR.
