“Keep politics out of my sports.” • It’s a phrase we hear all the time, but it oversimplifies the relationship between sports and the world around us. I recently had the opportunity to interview Abdul El-Sayed, and I wanted to ask him about was his experience as a collegiate athlete. Specifically, I was interested in his perspective on the intersection of sports and politics, and what he learned from being in a locker room surrounded by teammates from different backgrounds and beliefs. I understand why people want sports to be an escape from politics, but the reality is that throughout history, sports and politics have been deeply intertwined. From breaking racial barriers to fighting for equality and civil rights, athletes have played a pivotal role in pushing society toward meaningful social change. Having spent much of my life in locker rooms, I believe there’s something uniquely powerful about bringing people together who might disagree on what’s best for the country, but still have to trust one another and work toward a common goal. Sports have always been about more than just the game. And sometimes, the impact they have beyond the field is far greater than anything that happens on it. Here’s a portion of our conversation. #abdulformichigan #moneyoutofpolitics #medicareforall #voteblue
not afraid of the dark 🖤
Money might not buy happiness, but it solves most of the problems that steal it. 💵🧠 Some of life’s heaviest stress comes with a price tag. The rent that’s due before the paycheck lands. The car that breaks down on the way to work. The family member who needs help when you have nothing left to give. The job you can’t stand but can’t afford to leave. Money can’t fix a broken heart or buy real friendship. But it can buy peace of mind, time with the people you love, safety for your family and the freedom to walk away from what’s hurting you. That’s why learning how money works isn’t greedy. It’s responsible. Happiness can’t be bought, but peace of mind often can, so learn how to afford it. I’ve called it. Time for me to have a rest in September and October and let the kids have a crack at the Supercars endurance races. I’ve had a hell of a ride. There’s too many people to thank, and too many great memories to recount. But I know I always gave it my best and I couldn’t have done it without the incredible support from family, friends and the crews at the track. Locking into the next life Chapter!
