Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras made headlines in 2023 after earning her private pilot’s license at just 17, before even getting her driver’s license. She began flying lessons and ground-school classes in 2020, with support from her father, who was also a pilot. While attending West Boca Raton High School in Florida, she joined the Palm Beach County School District’s Aviation Academy, which helped fund her training. By September 2023, she had passed her aviation knowledge test and accumulated 88 flight hours, earning her private pilot’s license. She continued advancing her career, eventually obtaining commercial, multi-engine, instrument and certified flight instructor qualifications. In a social media post, she asked, “How often do you see two pilots under 21 with a commercial, multi-engine, instrument, CFI/CFI-I?” She had also accumulated approximately 1,300 flight hours. In an interview, she joked about being able to fly but not drive, saying, “People say, ‘Oh, you can’t drive,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I can fly.’” #nathaliafilgueiras #florida #airplane #pilot #palmbeach
Adam Hamawy, an Egyptian-American surgeon who gained national attention for his harrowing 2024 medical mission to Gaza, celebrated his victory in New Jersey’s 12th district. “It’s historic, it’s the first Muslim in New Jersey to get elected to Congress. And it’s a historic win for the people just across the country as we see this wave of blue Democrats win over and over again,” he told Middle East Eye. The 57-year-old former US Army combat surgeon campaigned against military assistance to Israel and other countries committing human rights violations, and condemned the war on Iran as “illegal and immoral”.

Democrats are projected to flip control of the House in Tuesday’s midterm elections, setting up the first real check on President Donald Trump’s power in Washington since he returned to the White House two years ago. Several news organizations projected that Democrats would win a majority of the chamber, as the party rode a wave of voter dissatisfaction driven by cost-of-living concerns exacerbated by an unpopular war in Iran.
