If you’re stretching your hip flexors, check if you’re making this common mistake. You get into your favorite stretch, usually some kind of lunge, and judge it by the angle between your trunk and thigh, and since it looks deep and feels intense, you assume it’s working. But there’s a piece missing, because between your trunk and thigh sits your pelvis, which moves on its own. If you measure the angle between your pelvis and thigh instead, you’ll often see that the hip isn’t really in extension, so even though you feel tension, it isn’t hitting your hip flexors. Instead, bring your back leg slightly forward to take off some tension and free up your pelvis, and then tuck your pelvis under. That tuck is what creates the hip extension, because when the leg is fixed, you can extend the hip by rotating the pelvis around the head of the femur. If you look at the angles again, you’ll see that even though the leg is less far back, the hip is more extended, which means the stretch is finally targeting what you wanted. Now keep that pelvis position and do your work from there.
