On view at
@cacmalaga “Rehearsal for Joy”, the first solo show by the American artist Theresa Chromati in a European museum which presents an intimate new suite of eight paintings and a recent diptych. The paintings are presented into an oval aluminum structure that gives unity to the entire set, based on the idea that life is in the round. A bronze sculpture, representing one of recurrent Chromati’s scrotum flowers, completes the show. Chromati’s work expands the traditional boundaries of painting through fragmented forms of desire and an abstracted figuration. The artist explores diverse layers of black womanhood through vortices of vibrant colour and texture. As usual in Chromati’s oeuvre, the paintings are composed by many layers, all of them related to each other mixing different media as acrylic paint, glitter, or soft sculpture. Each paintings is a moment of approaching life head on, front and center. In them, life imperfections are treated with grace and appreciation for the layers they build over time. Through 2nd June.
