Less than 24 hrs in NY. Had to celebrate the 60th birthday for the lovely @bevysmith last night! Now back in Cali. Happy Birthday, Bev!!!

Vinandi first 🤍

I had the best day on the best day to be in the best city in the world.

Can’t imagine a more meaningful way to mark my new relationship with running than to serve as run support for former Army Master Sergeant @cedrickingmsg — a purple-hearted double above-the-knee amputee due to stepping on an IED.

A victory for me to just make it to the start, crossing the finish with Cedric was a peak never-will-I-forget life experience.

Rewinding back a year and half, my spine surgeon said I should forget about running. Forget that, I thought. So, I baked up a plan and began plotting my way in.

For the first seven months of my spinal fusion recovery, only slow walking. I began PT on month 8, with light strength training starting a few weeks after that.

Since then, I’ve been in my home gym by the four o’clock hour, every single day aside from a handful of exceptions.

To celebrate 1 year post-op, I ran my first mile, a slow one with @dan_churchill. From there, I patiently pursued a six-month relationship with my treadmill, careful to never push with a first-for-me less-is-best philosophy.

As a consequence of caution, I can’t say I was exactly ready for the NYC marathon, as my run training consisted of two weekly 5-mile run-walks.

Nevertheless, I decided to give it a go. And I’m delighted I did. The spine did fine. And despite my lack of aerobic conditioning, my body held up long enough to cross the finish line.

Striding alongside Cedric is the how. Taking my strength from his kept me connected to my higher power.

The why. While running again was my goal, Cedric confirmed that my purpose is service.

Now 60 and now on the other side of my season of forced repose, I have greater clarity on what matters. Not so much about ego gratification anymore, what wakes me up is more giving of myself to other people.

If you want a big and beautiful life, make it about something much larger than yourself.

Thx @achilles_international for your incredible work. @joechura for recruiting me into this adventure & @cedrickingmsg for your strength, and infectious inspiration.

And thank you NYC. You remain undefeated. You leave me hopeful.

See you next year.

in 2024 i publically went off the deep end, i accused my dad of things that were untrue. I felt justified and cut my parents off entirely . I was so angry & it was the bane of my existence. At the same time I missed them so much. My siblings stopped talking to me . 2024 hurt. I had no where to go but to Jesus and I’m standing here publically telling you God healed me. If you know me you can testify to it . Father’s day of 2025 I suprised my dad , i was nervous I didn’t know how he would respond seeing me after all i said and did , and this moment is forever etched in my soul. zero pause . he held me and he cried . God removed the hatred from my heart the year we didn’t speak .I got delivered. I hear lies spoken that restoration only happened because my dad is running for governor . get out of here with that bs. That wasn’t even a thought yet . May i encourage anyone who has caused any separation from people you love . Let God heal you first - that is your only task. He knows how to do the rest. I love you dad .
