when i was 16 my world was irrevocably changed when i found a playlist on spotify called “angry girl music of the indie rock persuasion.” one listen to bikini kill’s “rebel girl” and i found the music i had been searching for my entire life. i yearned for music that was by angry girls for angry girls. i have never been an angry person, probably because of who i am naturally and who i was socialized to be. but this music unlocked part of me i had suppressed.
riot grrrl utterly freed me from the confines of girlhood and helped me to find the powers of girlhood. i was enthralled with the riot grrrls. before i learned more about the riot grrrl movement, i was intensely absorbing all i could from their music.
riot grrrl was my permission slip for becoming my true self. it gave me the knowledge that i could be my genuine self and that the judgement that may come is irrelevant. and as time has gone by, the songs of these punk women have followed me, making sure i stay true to myself.
and tonight i got to see kathleen hanna’s book tour! in reading her book, i learned she was writing her songs for her 15 year old self and knowing that makes my 16 year old self feel even more understood.
riot grrrl helped my tap into my power as a girl and as a human. when i was 16 my journey as an activist and artist really began and as time has gone by i have been able to establish myself in the history of montana court as a climate activist and an artist.
riot grrrl is my muse and she has evolved within my soul.
the power of music and musical movements will follow us for the rest of this life. music is one of social justice’s greatest powers and i am so grateful to all the artists in this world.
may art and music guide you to your truest self.
