Where are you finding peace?

I'm struggling to find ways to stay sane when it seems like the world is ruled by insanity.

I wrote this poem at a particularly dark time to try to articulate what gives me respite. Firstly, I can live and die at peace with my conscience. Second, it's knowing that the course of history is not kind to empires and that it is a matter of when, not if, a self-destructive ideology will end.

We are not gods. We are not greater than the tides of nature and history.

The history of my people dates back millenia, while the occupation barely dates back one lifetime. A similar thing can be said about the current extractive world order, which won't outlast indigenous practices or other eras of human development.

I feel at peace knowing our lives are a tiny sliver of time in the course of human history (let alone the history of the universe). While I am hopeful I will see the day myself, I am not dependent on it for my peace. I know many, many more generations will live free than those who lived under occupation.

In the meantime, this is not a self-fulfilling prophecy - we must keep pushing, knowing the wind is at our backs.
