@occa.software Learn how you can improve the look and feel of your Retro Horror Game with modern rendering techniques. Our Volumetric Fog and Volumetric Lighting asset, Buto, makes it easy to add depth and texture to your scenes in Unity.
Traditional retro horror games exhibit a strong aesthetic, primarily relying on PSX-era polygon counts and texturing styles to set a particular tone. We suggest that these horror games could benefit from blending traditional PSX-style texturing with modern rendering techniques like volumetric fog.
Volumetric fog differs from traditional fog techniques in three major ways. First, volumetric fog allows for god rays, which is when light punches through the fog in such a way as to create implicit geometry with lit media. Second, volumetric fog allows for variable density of the fog media, which gives added depth and texture to the scene, especially when this variable density is panned over time to give the effect of windy fog. Third, volumetric fog unlocks volumetric lighting for additional lights, which gives you greater control over the mood and feeling of your scene by spreading soft illumination across space in addition to the standard on-surface lighting.
If you have any questions about volumetric fog, or would like to try Buto in your projects, you can DM us. We're happy to help you get set up. In addition, we look forward to featuring your game on our Instagram and other social media channels.
Cheers!
Michael
