China’s years-long splurge on bridges, tunnels, expressways, high-speed rail and airports is beginning to tail off. Questions are likely to grow about whether it was all worthwhile. The humanitarian cost has been enormous: millions have been turfed off their land to make way for roads, railways, airports and other such projects—often without their consent and sometimes with little compensation. The country has grown far richer, and praise for the transport network, at home and abroad, is often effusive. But weighing up the benefits of transport infrastructure is difficult anywhere. Mile 15 is one of the most dreaded miles of the New York City Marathon. All the noise and electric energy from the sidelines that make the marathon such a singular event vanish as runners climb the Queensboro Bridge. They are left with just the sound of collective panting and of hundreds of sneakers shuffling against asphalt. “Everyone is fighting their own demons as they are going up the bridge,” one runner told our reporter. At the link in our bio, experience what it’s like to run across the bridge during the NYC Marathon, and read more about the victorious descent into the “wall of sound.” Visuals by @jonahmarkowitz

This wasn't on our plans for the week... but life has a way of sometimes suddenly bringing you to your knees and reminding you what really matters. ❤️ Here is a small update for GoodLuck fans: The last few days have been a bit of a rollercoaster for us. On Sunday I noticed something strange about Ben’s eye - it was super puffy so we thought maybe allergies & gave him an antihistamine. Then, yesterday he noticed one pupil was much smaller than the other. He’d had a small headache the day before, but otherwise felt completely fine. Thankfully we decided to get it checked out. After a full day (in a very busy) emergency room & a few scans later and we’ve discovered an abnormality in one of the main arteries supplying blood to his brain, with doctors suspecting a small tear in the artery wall. He’s now in hospital being monitored while they work out the best way forward. Thankfully there’s no sign of a stroke and he’s feeling good, but wow... what an unexpected wake-up call. I think we’ve been running at a million miles an hour for so long that we’ve almost forgotten how to slow down. Between the music, the shows, the festivals and being parents, life has been FULL. Beautifully full, but full nonetheless. And suddenly, none of the deadlines or to-do lists seem quite so important.🙏 We’re feeling incredibly grateful that we caught this early, and it’s been a big reminder to slow down a little, be present and hold each other a little bit closer. We might need to take our foot off the gas for a moment while Ben recovers, but we’ll keep you posted. Sending love to you all, and a little reminder to look after yourselves and each other. ❤️ Jules x
Don’t forget we should remember to respect the office. Yes Trump and the GOP were not “the winners” but the “losers” in this case actually would be those who are rude and gloating about it and taking “pot shots “ at elected officials. We must unite as “Americans “ no matter which side of the isle you are on.
