Paying for dinner in America comes with a few extra steps that Europeans just don’t understand.

In the European Union, menu prices have to include tax, so the number you see is the number you pay, while in the US, sales tax varies by state and city and usually gets added at the end.

Tipping is the other big difference. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers in the US is still just $2.13 an hour, unchanged since 1991, so in many states servers rely on tips for most of their income. In much of Europe, servers earn a regular wage, and in countries like France, a service charge is already built into the menu price by law.

Even the way you pay is different, since European restaurants usually bring a card reader right to the table, while many American spots still take your card away and come back with a receipt to sign. That’s slowly changing as more US restaurants switch to tableside payment, though the tip screen isn’t going anywhere.

13 years ago, I married my best friend. From the first time I laid eyes on him, I knew he was the man I wanted to marry. I just couldn’t have known then how much sweeter it would be to actually be his wife.😘

I’ve never known a kinder, gentler, more thoughtful man. Chad notices the little things. He checks on me throughout the day, sends me texts, and is always looking for a way to make me smile or make my day a little easier. There is so much that goes into raising a big family, and he carries it right alongside me. Nothing is too hard or too small for him to do and I’ve never heard him complain. 🥹

He works harder than anyone I know, yet he still makes time to hold me close and give our children his attention every day. I hope they grow up understanding what a gift it is to have a daddy like him.❤️

And behind so many things I’ve dreamed of doing, there he is. Listening to another idea, encouraging me to try, helping me figure it out. Being loved by someone who believes in you like that gives you courage.☺️

I tease him that we’re slowly turning into the same person. Our likes, our dreams, the things that make us happiest… a simple life, barefoot children running around, animals, a garden, home-cooked meals. More time outside and less time on our phones. Watching the sunrise or staying out for one more minute of a sunset. Time in God’s Word together. Holding hands. Lots of hugs.🌱🐄🪏☀️

I never could have pictured all of this 13 years ago. But I believe more than ever that God knew exactly who I needed when He gave me Chad. This life with him is more than I knew to ask for.

Chad, these have been the best 13 years of my life. I love being your wife, raising our children with you, and building a life with Jesus at the center. Even with a house full of people, you still make me feel like your favorite. 🤍

Many people don’t know that the @nycmarathon is shepherded by a nonprofit called New York Road Runners. Everyone I’ve met at @nyrr has been wonderful and they produce what might be the single most unifying event of the year. Additionally the NYRR holds numerous year-long programs for youth and adults which grow the popularity of the sport globally. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the five-borough race, and I was so happy to partner with NYRR to share the stories of two special NYC marathon runners. Congratulations to Danish and everyone else who ran and finished their own marathon stories today, and a big thank you to New York Road Runners for their important work inspiring people globally to experience the power of running.
