Congratulations to Dr. Amy Acton on her reported historic victory in Ohio!

Amy Acton survived childhood sexual abuse and neglect. She grew up to become a physician, a public health leader, and now, Ohio’s first woman governor.

During the campaign, Vivek Ramaswamy aired an attack ad featuring her estranged mother, who accused Acton of lying about her childhood. Yet court records corroborated key elements of Acton’s account of abuse.

As a pediatrician, I find the decision to use someone’s childhood trauma as political ammunition deeply disturbing.

Childhood abuse survivors deserve compassion, dignity, and the opportunity to define their own futures. Acton’s story is a reminder that trauma does not have to define the limits of someone’s life.

Congratulations, Dr. Acton. Your story matters, and so do the stories of countless survivors who are watching.
