Island Apparatus _ 01/02
The Island Apparatus integrates salvaged, “ready-made” elements. It provides multi-functionality and creates a scale shift from kitchen to the three-story high living room and the rest of the 1864 industrial loft space. The displacement and coming together of these pieces is recognized in its versatility, in the transformation between Kitchen Island and Island Bar. When closed, the island delineates the kitchen as a semi-enclosed space; when pivoted open, the island participates in a continuous event space from kitchen to garden.
Images in order of appearance: 1) Island Apparatus Animation, Marpillero Pollak Architects, 2020; 2) Island configuration, MPA, 2020; 3) Social Activator configuration, MPA, 2020.
