The Profit Sharing Paradox Singapore Airlines just handed its staff a bonus worth eight months of salary after posting record profits, and the internet is losing its mind trying to figure out what to call it. The meme gets it right: this is not a glitch in capitalism, this is capitalism doing exactly what it said on the tin. Here is the thing about Rome that everyone forgets when they reduce it to bread and circuses and conquest. The Roman merchant class, the negotiatores, understood something fundamental: a worker who eats well, sleeps well, and feels invested in the outcome of the business works harder, complains less, and does not burn the warehouse down. Profit sharing was not charity in the ancient world, it was infrastructure. You were buying loyalty the same way you bought stone for an aqueduct, because the return on investment was obvious to anyone who could count. The British East India Company, the Dutch VOC, the early American railroad barons, they all had the same playbook available to them and chose extraction over investment every single time. That choice created the reputation capitalism now has to fight against at every turn. Singapore Airlines did the math differently and the result is a workforce that treats the brand like it belongs to them, because in a very real sense, this bonus makes it so. The prank is that we have spent two centuries arguing about whether capitalism is moral or immoral when the actual question was always simpler: are the people running the enterprise smart enough to know that shared prosperity compounds, and pure extraction does not.
