BEACH CRUISERS
With the new year comes new resolutions. 2021 is a fresh slate for you to write on, you don't want to leave out Sustainable Living. As you set productive goals you want to achieve, set Green goals alongside and put in conscious effort to achieve them.
Now it is not uncommon to have several people visit the beach and relax with their families, friends, and loved ones. You find people playing games and dancing to the tunes of the ocean waves, and at night, staring into the starry sky while the moon glistens in the night. Surreal right? Just in time for Vitamin 'Sea'. Well, guess what? Our beautiful oceans are gradually deteriorating as a result of our activities. This is rather unfortunate as we might no longer be enjoying the beaches like we are used to.
According to UNESCO, eight million metric tons of plastic are being dumped into the oceans yearly. That is the equivalent of nearly 57,000 blue whales. When plastics break down, their debris cause the deaths of more than a million sea birds every year as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals. These are just the statistics for plastics, now imagine other types of waste being dumped into the oceans with their potentials for causing harm.
This is why we cannot afford to forget to be sustainable even in these moments of total relaxation to protect the beach and the oceans that hosts us. Here are sustainable habits to practice this year when relaxing at the beach.
1. ~Leave no man behind~ . In this case, leave no waste behind. Everything you take to the beach should leave with you. Don't throw any waste into the ocean, if you do that, you're sending spears of death to animals like turtles, sea gulls, fishes, and more.
2. Avoid using disposable products like single-use plastics. Examples are PET bottles and straws. You can come along with your reusable bottles, or serve your drinks in reusable cups at the beach.
3. Pack your beach meals with reusable containers like Coolers and serve with reusable plates as opposed to plastic bags or plates.
