‘Resilience Training’ is a performance work currently posing as a sculpture in Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden, Christchurch. The performance is born from a year of phenomenal conversations with about life, spirit, and mercy with Noel Meek... and my own reflections on fatigue, surprise, and the demand for resilience in our current moment.

The performance comprises of up to four tasks people can participate in as they walk through the native garden. Four banners around the garden act as gathering posts to enter or exit the performance. Each banner reimagines one of the four cardinal virtues - new virtues we might practice to better prepare for the inevitable challenges in the years ahead: Mercy, Humour, Poverty, and Courage (just a start). I’ll explain details about each performance task in the next few days, for those who cannot attend in person.

If you’re in Christchurch this weekend 20 & 21 March, come along! Tai Tapu is open 11am - 3pm. 1/199 Cossars Road, RD2, Christchurch.

Images:
1. Mercy - banner installed with cotton twine on a broken branch I found in the red zone
2. Poverty - banner bound with cotton to the branch of a living tree
3. Humour - banner detail, with collaborative drawing underway by lichen and moss covered twigs from supporting trees
4. Courage - hard to read the stitched letters in this image, but this banner says ‘COURAGE’, and is whipping about in the wind
5. At the foot of each banner are the performance elements: rocks, coal buckets filled with water, unfired clay carrying vessels, worm farms
6. Another of performance elements
7. My reliable old Pfaff sewing machine has made more artworks than clothes
8. Banner letter stitching detail... more like colouring in on the sewing machine
