The first question I get when people see my paintings is "Are those real dollars?"
I chose money as my medium to illustrate how we as black people in America went from being the assets to owning our own or as @henrylouisgates puts it, "We went from being chattel (property) to owning it."
My latest body of work, The Currency Collection is a portrait series chronicling wealth and income disparities according to race and gender.
In 2019, I began painting my Lineage Series. Each mixed-media portrait tells its own story of the past and present using color, collage, currency, text and texture.
This is the first portrait in the series, Compositions, Wynn 5C, and is inspired by my son and grandfather. It reads:
5 GENERATIONS AGO, I WOULD HAVE BEEN BORN ENSLAVED. FOR 25 DECADES MY ANCESTORS WERE PROPERTY. MY 90 YEAR OLD GREAT-GRANDFATHER PICKED COTTON WITH HIS DAD AT MY AGE. THEIR LAND, MY LAND, WAS TAKEN ALONG WITH 98% (12 MILLION ACRES) OF BLACK OWNED FARM LANDS TAKEN OVER A 100 YEAR PERIOD. MY GRANDPARENTS SAID IN THE 1930'S EVERYONE WAS POOR. NEW DEAL & WWII POLICIES CREATED A MIDDLE CLASS WHITE SOCIETY WHILE DENYING THE MAJORITY OF BLACK AMERICANS WEALTH BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES. MY PARENTS ARE IN THEIR 40'S, THEY ARE THE FIRST GENERATION OF BLACKS BORN FREE FROM LAWS AGAINST BLACK ECONOMIC PROGRESS.
