The Belleville Three member has died 🕊️ A spokesperson for Greensmith Artists, the agency that represents the legendary Detroit producer, confirmed to RA that he was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City this morning, and later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Born in Detroit in 1962, Atkins grew up in the nearby town of Belleville, where he met future collaborators Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. They'd become known as the Belleville Three: a trio whose pioneering work in the early '80s helped establish the Motor City as one of electronic music's most important creative centres. Atkins's influence extended well beyond his hometown. As Detroit techno found audiences across Europe, particularly in the UK and Germany, his productions helped inform a new generation of producers and DJs. His music became closely associated with the futuristic, machine-driven aesthetic that would shape the genre's development throughout the late '80s and '90s.
