At 18, his father started charging him rent. At 30, he finally understood why.

For 12 years, he handed over part of his hard-earned money every month. He thought his father was being unnecessarily strict, especially when other parents let their children live at home for free.

But on his wedding day, his father surprised him with something he never expected.

A notebook documenting every rent payment he'd made over the years, along with a savings account containing all that money, plus interest.

What he believed was money lost had quietly been building his financial future.

His father hadn't been collecting rent to make a profit. He had been teaching his son how to budget, stay consistent, and take responsibility for his finances.

And when the time came to begin a new chapter of his life, those years of discipline became a financial head start.

The lesson? Sometimes, the greatest gift a parent can give isn't money itself, but the habits that teach their children how to manage it.

It's a powerful story about patience, financial responsibility, and a father's love expressed through actions rather than words.

Whether this story is true or simply a lesson passed down, its message is worth remembering.

Good parenting isn't always about making life easier today. Sometimes, it's about preparing your children for tomorrow.

Would you use this approach to teach your children financial responsibility?

Comment “COURSE” and I’ll send you all 5 free courses in one doc

Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley put these online for free. This is the order I’d take them in to go from never coding to building AI agents.

Here’s the order 👇
1️⃣ Harvard CS50P: Python from zero, about 16 hours of lectures
2️⃣ MIT Missing Semester: the terminal and Git, plus a new lecture on agentic coding with Claude Code
3️⃣ Harvard CS50 AI: your first project is a tic-tac-toe AI that never loses
4️⃣ Stanford CS146S: building software with AI, and the creator of Claude Code gave a guest lecture
5️⃣ Berkeley Agentic AI: 12 lectures on AI agents, with speakers like Noam Brown from OpenAI

What’s in the doc:
✅ The link to every course, in order
✅ How long each one takes and what you need before you start
✅ The first lecture to watch for each one
✅ The free certificates, and the one thing that costs money

Why this matters: four of these have their full lectures on YouTube, about 51 hours in all, and Stanford’s puts its slides and assignments online. None of it costs anything to watch.

👉 Follow me then comment “COURSE” and I’ll DM you every link
