The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year extension for Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme. The decision extends the service tenure for Agniveers to a total of six years. While the initial scheme offered regular employment in the Defense Forces to 25% of Agniveers, the government has now announced that the remaining 75% of Agniveers will also be offered enrollment as regular soldiers subject to their willingness and their meeting selection criteria. The additional engagement, described as a “Second Tour of Duty”, forms part of reforms aimed at building a younger, fitter, technologically equipped and future-ready military, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said. Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani said continued engagement would depend on performance and its review. He clarified that Agnipath has not been discontinued. The announcement came weeks before around 18,000 Agniveers were due to leave the armed forces.
