Just a quick note about Halloween: If you’re planning on dressing up in a costume this weekend that makes you look cool and/or attractive, just be aware that it’s actually going to have the opposite effect, to most people around you. It took me many years to learn this, but, in fact, the stupider your Halloween costume is, the cooler and more attractive you actually become. There’s nothing more disappointing than the guy who shows up to the party in sunglasses and his most stylish tailored suit, and when you ask him what he’s supposed to be, he says he’s an FBI agent, or one of the Men In Black. Come on bro, just don’t even wear a costume at that point. “Who, me? Can’t you tell? I’m Jason Statham from The Transporter 2.” Good grief. Nothing screams fun and whimsy like being too-cool to put on a little face paint or a pair of tights. You don’t even have to invest a huge amount of effort into it either. Even just writing “BOOK” on your face and going as “Facebook” like Jim from The Office would be better. Worst character in all of television, by the way. Mopey simp with a superiority complex engages in adultery. America’s sweetheart of the aughts, ladies and gentlemen. I think this year I’m going to dress up as a first edition copy of Douglas Coupland’s quirky 2006 postmodern tech comedy novel, JPod. Because the only thing worse than being too-cool for halloween, is having a smug, hyper-niche costume, designed to go over everyone else’s heads. *cue haunting Vincent Price laughter*
