The Bronx rapper addressed colorism in a lengthy statement on X, saying she recognizes the prejudice exists but won’t allow her accomplishments to be reduced to her skin tone. Cardi reflected on the criticism she faced early in her career, recalling how people focused on her appearance and called her a “dirty stripper” before she broke through with “Bodak Yellow.” Her comments came after podcaster Damona “Mona” Love argued that Cardi’s complexion and heritage gave her an advantage in the entertainment industry, particularly when it comes to brand deals. “I will never not acknowledge the prejudice in our system,” Cardi wrote, adding that recognizing colorism should not mean diminishing her accomplishments or personal experience. Cardi had a lot to say at the link in bio.
