Especially when it's like, the best pun you ever made I'm your life and it isn't funny anymore when you have to explain it. 😂

Soon after I had a million dollar year in my twenties playing poker, I sabotaged myself.

I was brought up with conflicting messages about money, and it was the root of most of the tension in my family. So when I got some of it early in my tournament career, I had no experience dealing with those sums. I didn't want it to change who I am — I assumed people with money were selfish, and that it would suck my soul.

I played too big right after my breakout year, with money that hadn't hit the bank account yet, on deals that didn't end up going through. I was in debt for a few years after that and it spiralled into the worst era of my life.

It's taken years of reprogramming to internalize that money is just a neutral tool and resource. It makes me happy that I get to eat what I want and travel where I please — and I will never feel the pressure to overlook red flags and stay in a relationship for fear that I will have nothing to start over with again.

I think of my grandmother, who left her husband to raise 6 kids on her own when she found out he had a whole other family. In many ways I live my life the way I do for her, and for all the women who have given their life to their family and feel they have very little of their own.

I know that money pressures hit men too. With women still mostly being hypergamous, there is immense pressure on men to provide with fewer traditional opportunities. I think in general having these conversations without animosity and shame helps everyone. This is also a suggestion that you don't need to take pie-in-the sky risks to try to make something of yourselves to prove you're worthy.

Playing and making money in poker for so long sometimes doesn't seem like real life, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have today. I'm sharing these reflections in case they help someone who feels a bit stuck.
