Artist Bio:
Glenn Potter-Takata is an artist of Japanese descent working in video, performance, sound art, and butoh. Originally from Los Angeles, Potter-Takata relocated to Chicago in 2006 to earn his degree in theatre and philosophy. He went on to become a rehearsal director and teaching artist at Redmoon, a Chicago-based experimental performance group. At Redmoon he studied and then taught their own pedagogy of somatic practice and performance, which was loosely based on Vsevolod Meyerhold’s Biomechanics.
After returning to Los Angeles in 2015 to work as a puppeteer and study contact improvisation, Potter-Takata went to the Bronx in 2017 to pursue his MFA at Sarah Lawrence College, where he focused on multimedia performance and studied butoh under Kota Yamazaki and Mina Nishimura. Since graduating from Sarah Lawrence, he has been teaching and creating his own butoh work and has begun to develop sound art to accompany his performance work.
Over the past year, Potter-Takata has been studying to become a Buddhist monk in the Shingon Chuin tradition, having received his Tokudo (first ordination) in January of 2021; he is very interested in starting to incorporate Buddhist philosophy into his performance work, whether it be in the content of the performance or in its structure.
Potter-Takata’s work has been presented by Gibney Dance, Movement Research, Triskelion Arts, HERE Arts, Dixon Place, Amanda + James, and LES Dance Crawl. Performance credits include works at Links Hall, Pasadena Playhouse, National Puppetry Festival, Long Beach Opera, Walkabout Theater, and Rogue Artists Ensemble
