Introducing standing room mag Issue 02, with our cover star @grentperez

There is a particular discomfort in growing up: the realisation that the person you are becoming might not have much in common with the person you once were. The things that came naturally begin to require consideration; the freedom of being young gives way to the awareness of how you are perceived. Somewhere between the two, it becomes difficult to tell whether you have outgrown an earlier version of yourself or simply learned to keep it in check.

For Grent Perez, that tension has taken on a name. goose, his forthcoming EP, places Grent in conversation with Goose, a younger, more playful alter ego who appears to have little interest in the responsibilities of being an adult. Where Grent is measured by the person he has become, Goose offers a return to the instincts, impulses and irreverence that can get lost along the way. The two are not necessarily at odds because one is right and the other wrong. Rather, their conflict raises a more interesting question: what happens when growing up starts to feel like growing away from yourself?

It is an idea that gives goose a life beyond the familiar exercise of an artist reflecting on personal growth. The relationship between Grent and Goose creates room to examine the competing versions of ourselves that coexist, often uneasily, beneath a single name. There is the person we present to the world, the person we believe we ought to be, and the one who still wants to do things simply because they feel good. Maturity might mean learning to live with those differences, rather than deciding which version deserves to survive.

More carbs. Higher insulin. Nearly 700 FEWER calories eaten per day. 🤯

That’s an inconvenient finding if you believe insulin spikes inevitably make you hungry and drive overeating.

In this controlled NIH study, 20 adults lived in a research facility and consumed two different diets for two weeks each:

🥔 High carb, low-fat: ~75% carbohydrate.
🥩 High fat, ketogenic: ~10% carbohydrate.

They could eat as much or as little as they wanted. Despite higher glucose and insulin levels, participants ate an average of 689 fewer calories per day on the high-carb diet (PMID: 33479499)

The carbohydrate-insulin model predicts that elevated insulin traps fuel in fat cells, leaving the rest of your body “starving” and driving you to eat more. These results went in the OPPOSITE direction.

Does this short study prove everyone should eat a high-carb, low-fat diet? No. The diets differed in several ways, so we can’t attribute the difference in food intake solely to carbs or insulin. But it’s a pretty big problem for the claim that higher insulin necessarily means more hunger and overeating. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My amazing brother!! 🤘🏼❤️

It was so awesome to spend time with my big brother here in Portland. Growing up, I wanted to be just like him, whether it was wearing the same Halloween costume, liking the same sweets and snacks, and participating in the same sports and activities. He was my biggest influence and always looked out for me and cared for me.

When I was about 12-years-old, he was the one who introduced me to Metallica and Pantera. After only listening to top 40’s and pop, it was the first time I ever heard music that sounded anything like it. Master of Puppets was the first album I heard, and I knew I had to tackle it on guitar.

We learned guitar together and jammed through our high school years. When I turned 16 he bought me my first drum set for my birthday. If it weren’t for him, I honestly don’t know if my love for music would have gotten this far.

I’m so proud of how far he’s come now and everything he’s accomplished. Though we live farther away now, coming together always feels like time was never spent apart.

Thanks for being such an amazing sibling, an awesome Uncle, and an incredible human being. Love you brother! You truly are the best. 🤘🏼❤️🤘🏼❤️
