A video from 2007 is circulating again, showing former President Bill Clinton praising Abdul El-Sayed during the University of Michigan’s commencement ceremony. El-Sayed, then a graduating senior selected to deliver the student address, spoke about overcoming religious and cultural divisions. Clinton was so impressed that he told the audience he wished people around the world could have heard El-Sayed’s remarks. Nearly two decades later, El-Sayed is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, facing Republican Mike Rogers in today’s November 3 election. El-Sayed has also recalled that Clinton privately encouraged him to consider a career in politics after the ceremony.

- there’s a voice in my head
that has my voice.
my words, my laugh,
the exact way i say my own name.
i didn’t write half of what it says.
it says it anyway,
in me,
like it owns the place.
it learned me young. it waits for the quiet.
in november the quiet comes at five
and stays till morning.
it does its work in that dark.
the building ticks all night.
pipes, heat, somebody else’s tv.
it tells me what the quiet means.
it tells me the meaning is me.
it tells me the good one was luck.
it tells me say less next time.
it tells me they are only being kind.
it tells me a man my age should be further.
it tells me i knew how this ends. and it doesn’t even lie, most nights.
it deals in true things
cut down to the worst of them.
that’s why i believe it.
it’s my voice, telling the truth,
with half the truth left out. it’s never once,
in all its talking,
said a kind thing in my voice.
it knows every word i know
for an ending,
and none of my words
for a beginning.
it says my name at me.
it’s never once said it to me.
it’s got my voice down perfect.
it just hasn’t got me in it. i used to answer it.
answering is only more talking
in the same voice.
it can do me better than i can do me.
it never has to stop for breath. so last night, after hours of it,
i sat up in the dark
and said my name out loud.
not loud. just out.
the man who said it
didn’t sound like the voice at all.
older. rougher. tireder.
a man who’d been talked about all night
by somebody wearing his face. then i said it again,
slower,
the way you’d say it to somebody
you were trying to keep calm.
the way you’d say it
to somebody you weren’t done with. the voice had nothing.
in all its years of talking
it had never heard me
use my own voice gently.
it didn’t have that one.
it still doesn’t. my name is the only thing i own
that it can’t say right.
last night i said it right.
twice.
like i meant to keep him. - Dancer: @laetitia_channel_model #dancephotography #dancephotographer #canon #dance #yellowkorner
