The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) banned the use of vinyl chloride in aerosols on August 16, 1974, when it was discovered that the chemical was carcinogenic and could cause liver cancer. However, vinyl chloride is still used in other ways, such as in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, which is commonly used in plastic piping and other materials.
