JAIME CEPERO

Ima just come right out and say it! We don’t let BLACK singers sound like BLACK singers on broadway no more! Get into the tamber, the ping, the vocal inflections, the color… mother sounds like an entire tenor brass section with the lung capacity to boot. Very rarely do I feel like we allow black artists to interpret material in both OUR style and our VOICE. We need more of this today.

I miss you mama BJ!! You were such a light even the few times we crossed paths when I was just a kid. I remember sneaking to the club with the boys after the show and seeing her poke her head out her dressing room talm bout some “OH! So y’all can’t even invite a ole woman to shake the watusi I see? You know I like clubs too!”🤣 we was like BJ NO!!! Lmaooo We going to the gay bar! And you better believe she still tried to slide through!!! 🤣

Man I just had to uplift you today. I don’t know why you been on my mind - but we speak your name BJ Crosby. I hope you are up there letting the angels and ancestors HAVE it just as you let us have it in life. Brassy and vulgar In all your hilarious and sunny glory. Asé 🥰
