I’m an early childhood speech-language pathologist, and I’ve taught thousands of parents how to help their toddlers catch up on their language milestones.

And I’ve noticed a pattern with parents of late talkers whose toddlers understand everything but aren’t saying many words yet.

This is what happens:

Parents notice their toddler understands directions, knows what’s going on around them, follows along with books, but when it comes to actually talking, it’s nothing, or just a few words.

They go to the pediatrician and are told “wait and see, she’ll catch up.”
