every one of these photos was taken this year, normally id just post the first one but I don’t want to always only share the highlights when that’s not what real life looks like all of the time

I’ve dealt with bloating for my entire adult life (and to be honest I’m not surprised with the way that I’ve treated my body over the years this isn’t a “poor me” post) but a couple of months ago I started a gut health protocol with my functional health practitioner, eating low FODMAP and dairy free and since then, the only time I’ve bloated was the first couple of days after starting creatine (which has now completely settled)

for someone who has lived with painful bloating for so long, this feels like a miracle 🥹

btw I won’t be on this diet forever and we’re going to look to start phasing these foods back in at some stage, but I’m excited to see where this gut healing journey takes me because it’s not just about the bloating, it’s the energy levels, the digestion, the ability to build muscle because I’ve also been dealing with a absorption issues... so its been a lot!

please also know I’m just sharing what’s working for me (and this doesn’t replace medical advice). bloating is common but it is not normal, and it is so difficult/impossoble to self-diagnose so if it’s something you’ve been dealing with like I have, I always recommend working with a professional.

The Diagnosis of a Dead Generation

A blob-shaped patient walks into the doctor's office feeling old, and the physician, rather than checking blood pressure or running labs, simply asks about musical taste. The answer, a love of mid-2000s emo, gets scribbled onto the clipboard as a terminal prognosis: patient is basically dead. The joke lands because everyone who grew up with My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy on repeat knows exactly what it feels like to watch their defining cultural moment get carbon-dated in real time.

Rome had a version of this. The older patrician class clung to the Republic's traditions, its rhetoric, its music, its civic ceremonies, long after Augustus had rewritten the entire operating system of the state. To the new imperial generation, loving the old forms was not nostalgia, it was a clinical indicator that you were a relic. Suetonius and Tacitus both document how the language of the Republic was kept alive in Senate chambers while meaning absolutely nothing to anyone under forty in the street outside.

Every empire cycles through this. The Ottomans had their janissaries who refused modernization and paid with their lives for it in 1826. The Persians under Darius III were still tactically brilliant by the standards of a previous century, which is precisely why Alexander's oblique cavalry charge at Gaugamela read like a doctor writing "patient is basically dead" on a very large clipboard.

The prank is that every generation believes its cultural peak was the real one, the permanent one, the one history would recognize as correct. Rome believed that too. Rome is a ruin.
