Squalene, a lipid found naturally in plants, animals and human skin, is an effective moisturizer. The problem with squalene is that it can be a bit greasy for oily or acne-prone skin and it tends to have a short shelf life.

Squalane, a more stable, lighter-weight, hydrogenated version of squalene. Lab-made squalane, typically derived from squalene that’s extracted from sugarcane or olives, mimics the skin’s own natural oils so it’s easily tolerated by all skin types, including the most sensitive.
