Coming home has never felt so empty. I still expect to see you waiting for me, to be greeted by the little soul who made every home feel like home. Instead, I am met with silent echoes. It’s easier when the world is loud enough to distract me from your absence. But in the quiet hours, the midnight panic attacks & the mornings I wake without you, grief finds me. That’s when I cry for you to come back. Even in death, you are still teaching me about love, loss & the unbearable beauty of having something so precious that its absence can break you. You saved me from death more times than people will ever know. My greatest accomplice, my little shadow through every version of myself. Seventeen years of traveling, beach days, sleepless nights, laughter & tears. You witnessed parts of me no human ever will. You knew me before I knew myself & loved me through every person I had to become. The greatest blessing of my life was the day you let me save yours, never knowing you would spend the next seventeen years rescuing me. For that, I’m forever yours. What I would give to hold you one last time. To kiss the soft fur behind your ear. To simply look at you from across the room, doing absolutely nothing, just existing in the same world as me. I would give anything for one more ordinary day. A piece of my heart left this earth with you & that space will always belong to you. Seventeen years will never feel like enough when I wanted a lifetime. The hardest part of loving you is that I was your entire lifetime & now I have to live the rest of mine without you. So find me again. In this life, the next & every existence that follows. Find me wherever souls go when their bodies can no longer hold all the love they carry. If we are given a thousand lifetimes, I hope you choose me in every single one, because I will spend every lifetime looking for you. Come back, love of my life. Please, come back. ❤️‍🩹🕊️🥺
I take rumors as a compliment. Talking about me at tables I don’t sit at is called obsession. Stay bothered.
Next up for the Service95 Book Club… “In 2000, Zadie Smith detonated the books world with White Teeth and has been part of our literary DNA ever since. She’s been compared to everyone from Dickens to Rushdie, which is staggering praise for a debut author barely out of university. This glorious and hilarious intergenerational soap opera of multicultural London spans the 20th century, told through the eyes of the Iqbals and the Joneses, two families you will never forget. It starts with middle-aged big-hearted loser Archie Jones attempting – and failing – to gas himself in his car, stung by a failed first marriage from which all he salvaged was the vacuum cleaner. He meets 19-year-old Clara, a recovering Jehovah’s Witness of Jamaican heritage, at an End of the World party in a North London squat, and life begins again. Archie’s friend Samad Iqbal, who looks a bit like Omar Sharif from a certain angle, is still waiting for his wife to be born when the two men meet in the last days of the Second World War. When Samad and Alsana finally meet at their wedding three decades later, she is more than a match - physically and mentally - for her much older husband. The next generation – twins Millat and Magid Iqbal and Irie Jones – ramp up the volume, pushing their parents to the limit as they challenge their ideas of home and identity. It’s a big, loud, boisterous and fiercely clever book. Reading Zadie play with the multitudes of language on London’s streets, and explore identity, community and the competing pulls of nature and nurture, is an unforgettable experience. No wonder this book became the literary landmark for a generation.” - Dua x Make sure you’re subscribed to the newsletter for the full #MonthlyRead experience, and join the conversation on the @service95bookclub podcast – coming soon.
