On October 22, 2015, Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler was killed in action during a hostage rescue mission in Kirkuk Governate, Iraq.

Wheeler enlisted in the US Army as an infantryman in May 1995 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment following initial training. In 1997, he graduated from the Ranger Indoctrination Program and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Wheeler deployed with 2/75 three times before he was selected for the Army Special Mission Unit in 2004.
