Colonel Robert Gould Shaw was just 25 years old when he was killed on July 18, 1863, while leading the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment during an assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina. The regiment, one of the first Black military units raised in the Union Army, suffered devastating casualties. Confederate forces buried Shaw in a mass grave alongside his fallen soldiers, intending the act as an insult because he had commanded Black troops.

However, Shaw’s family saw the burial as an honour rather than a humiliation. When efforts were made to recover his remains, his father, Francis George Shaw, insisted that his son should remain beside the men who had fought and died with him. In a letter, he declared that the family would not wish his body removed from among his brave and devoted soldiers.

The courage of Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts became a defining moment in American Civil War history, helping challenge racist beliefs about Black soldiers and encouraging further Black enlistment in the Union Army. Their sacrifice is commemorated by the famous Robert Gould Shaw and 54th Regiment Memorial in Boston, honouring the men whose bravery helped advance the fight against slavery. 🇺🇸🕊️
