President Donald Trump has announced plans to end US financial aid to Israel by the end of 2026, bringing an early end to nearly $4 billion in annual military assistance.

Trump said the decision came at the suggestion of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who believes Israel is now economically strong enough to purchase its own military equipment without American assistance.

The move would end a longstanding arrangement under which the US provides Israel with $3.8 billion annually, currently scheduled to continue through 2028. Trump emphasized that the US would continue supporting Israel if necessary and that Israel could still purchase American weapons.

The announcement comes on the day of the US midterm elections. Netanyahu's office has not yet publicly confirmed the agreement, and details of how the existing aid commitments will be handled remain unclear.

In the weeks leading up to the midterms the deployment of US forces and US President Donald Trump's own statements ramped up talk that the US was getting ready to go back to war with Iran.

But now that the Democrats have taken control of both houses of Congress, could that impact the war?
