A mini me at the kindergarten fashion show as Tiger King. Not everyone wants to be a princess, some of us are born to be king.
I remember that day very clearly. I was about 6 or 7 years old. I was upset I was chosen to be the Tiger King at our kindergarten fashion show. My consume features the Chinese character“King” (王)in the chest. I thought I looked tedious, and who wanted to be outed as the ungirly one who plays Tiger King at that age wearing an “ugly” costume.
I longed to be the Peacock princess, she had the most beautiful and feminine looking costume. I begged mum to ask the teacher if I could be the peacock princess instead. I didn’t know what was discussed but it was clearly a no. Peacock princess was reserved for the most pretty and popular girl of the class, I was boyish and clumsy and was never going to be pretty enough to be the one. Good for mum even bothered to ask. To comfort me, mum made this big fan shaped side wing so I can feel prettier and more feminine in my costume.
I understand why I would want to be a princess back then, at that age, every little girl wanted to be a princess. That was what we were told we should be - a princess is someone who is nice, special, pretty and worthy of being loved and saved by a prince in fairytales. It pains me to think nowadays that was the only lifestyle and personality we were brainwashed to aspired to at such a young age. And now looking back at this slightly awkward, reluctant mini me as Tiger King, I am, absolutely thrilled and honoured for her. Thanks for seeing my real potential, teacher, whoever you were, and honestly my costume looked really cool.
I couldn’t care less about being a princess these days, the mere thought of it makes me want to roll my eyes to the back of my head.
I totally understand why would women and girls still want to be a princess, I am happy for you, but don’t forget, that is not the only options for us, some of us are born to be king.
For inspiration, the last slide is a portrait of the fascinating, one and only female emperor Wu Zetian 武则天 in Chinese history, who ruled in the years 690-705.
