“Cleared for the break!” ✈️
Flying the overhead break - or Initial - is my favorite way to land at an airport. It’s typically done by military aircraft and aerobatic planes. Instead of landing straight in, you fly over the runway between 800 ft. and 1,000’ ft. AGL, “break” (turn left or right downwind) at a predetermined point over the runway, pull 3-4 G’s, get the gear down, flaps in, and continue turning tightly for a short approach landing on the runway.
In the L-39 Albatros jet, we start the break at 200 kts. (230 mph). When we turn and pull G’s, our speed comes down nicely to 175 kts. or less to be able to get the gear and flaps in for landing.
If you haven’t tried it before, it’s worth a try! And it’s especially fun in a pink flight suit 🥰
