SISU — THE POWER WITHIN. Born in the cold. Driven by fire.❄️🔥🇫🇮 Introducing Finland’s National Costume for Miss Universe @missuniverse 2026, worn by Miss Universe Finland @veeragronlund and designed by @aviadarikherman A sculpted silver corset, a shimmering skirt and delicate embroidered leaves echo the ice, frost and beauty of the Finnish North. A sweeping flame cape reveals the fire within — the courage and determination that carry us forward. Ice represents where we come from.💎 Fire represents what carries us forward.🔥 At its heart is SISU: the quiet determination to keep going, even when you feel you have reached your limits. This costume is also a tribute to the women of Finland. The pioneers who opened doors, the generations who built our country and the women who continue to lift others as they rise. When Veera steps onto the Miss Universe stage, she will carry their spirit with her. 🇫🇮 This is SISU. This is the POWER WITHIN Photography: @lazekki Location: @billnasruukki Styling: @aleksandrakantola Production: Miss Suomi / Finnartist Oy National Director: @sunnevasjogren #nationalcostume #missuniverse #finland #misssuomi #missuniversefinland Fire in her eyes. SISU in her soul. 🔥❄️ Every detail tells a story. From frost-like embroidery to jewelled flames, Aviad Arik Herman’s design brings ice and fire together — with flame-shaped glasses as the finishing touch. Glin Castle Revisited You know you’re getting older when you stumble upon memories you didn’t remember you had. One such filing in the archives of the dusty library you could call my brain has to do with a few precious days spent at a castle in Ireland. I seem to remember a game of charades, there was also a murder mystery of some sorts. I think they asked me to teach some poor souls the art of photography. Good heavens. If memory serves the castle was surrounded by a kind of jungle, the wonderful hosts were utterly charming. It’s a bit of a blur. A wonderful blur. I blame it all on the sloe gin concoction that chap called Sam kept pouring us (I’m sure I protested for as long as I could.) There was a woman with an unpronounceable name - Cliodhingraenisqalinga or something like that. And the other woman, Imen. Just lovely. And her equally lovely husband who picked us up from the airport repeating his mantra “Happy wife, happy life.” I wasn’t quite sold on that one. Still, whatever works. Since we were in Scotland this summer, our daughter Gaia, the middle one, has been channeling a character called Mildred. Originally Scottish from Aberdeen, Mildred turned Irish when Gaia realised her talents were more consonant with the musicality of the Irish tongue. We haven’t seen much of Gaia since this summer but that’s alright, Mildred is a lovely girl and gets a lot of compliments. To please Mildred my wife dragged out of a box a lovely Irish sweater, a gift from our stay at Glin. And with it came flowing a bunch of memories from that slice of a stay, where we stepped for a brief moment into another life. And from there it was easy, old hard drive, search “Glin” - Voilà As for us, the Thorissons, and Mildred of course, we have already cast one eye towards the Emerald Isle (or is it Auld Sod) we have only visited once. There’s a trip on the horizon. There’s a Guinness in Dublin somewhere with my name on it. If I’m not mistaken you can rent out Glin castle for events and celebrations ... or if you’re planning a murder mystery, or just getting drunk with some friends. It’s magic.
