Poland's president turned his plane around mid-flight as police moved into the nation's top court and political leaders accused the government of a "coup d'état."

President Karol Nawrocki abruptly cut short his trip to Senegal after the head of Poland's Constitutional Tribunal was suspended, triggering protests outside the building.

Police secured the court as demonstrators gathered, some praying and holding rosaries, while others accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government of attacking the country's constitutional order.

Tusk insisted his government was working to restore judicial independence after years of controversial reforms under the previous administration.

But the confrontation went much deeper than one suspended judge.
