Protein bar packaging will promise a dessert that sounds like it belongs on a bakery’s seasonal menu. Chocolate fudge brownie, birthday cake frosting, caramel cookie dough—the descriptions are doing incredible work. Then you take a bite and spend the next thirty seconds trying to locate even a distant relative of the advertised flavor.

Somewhere between the dense texture and the mysterious aftertaste, you start negotiating with yourself about whether it’s actually good. By the last bite, you’ve decided it’s “pretty decent for a protein bar,” which is a very specific category of forgiveness. The wrapper promised a celebration, and you’ve been chewing through a practical obligation.
